Survey of Xylem-feeding Insects

Help us find froghoppers, spot spittlebugs and look for leafhoppers!

This is the recording form for the Survey of Xylem-feeding Insects

The survey focuses on all froghopper (spittlebug) species and certain larger species of leafhopper that feed on plant xylem fluid, and that may become important vectors of Xylella disease in plants. The results will be used to map the distribution of these insects to understand better how Xylella might enter and spread in the UK. The survey is part of the BRIGIT project coordinated by the John Innes Centre.

Further information on how to carry out the survey can be found on the survey website.

Please note that the spittlebugs do not cause significant damage to plants and do not transmit any other important plant diseases. There is no need to remove them or to treat the plant. The spittle will disappear by about the end of June when spittlebugs moult into adult insects.
